A GIS is a Geographical Information System and essentially it is a software tool that is available to geographers to aid the mapping and spatial analysis of data and information.

Since 2002 NBS has been involved in the process digitizing its geographical information using the geographical information systems. The essential advantage of using GIS is that all the functionality for working with multiple sets of geographic information are grouped and automated within one piece of software.

The use of GIS in NBS has led to reduction in paper work, ease of working with larger amounts of data, coping easily with frequent map changes and hence requiring less person time and money.

In relation to this NBS has been able to produce maps in relation to different census related indicators like poverty, education, health, access to water and also facilities.
