2007 TANZANIA HIV/AIDS INDICATOR SURVEY

Objectives

The objectives of the 2007 Tanzania HIV/AIDS and Malaria Indicator Survey (THIS) are to collect data on knowledge and behaviour regarding HIV/AIDS and malaria and to measure HIV prevalence among women and men age 15-49 and the presence of malaria parasites and anaemia among children aged 6-59 months (see box for key survey indicators). Most survey indicators will be produced separately for each of Tanzania's 26 regions. A related objective is to produce survey results in a timely manner and ensure that the data are disseminated to a wide audience of potential users in government and non-governmental organisations within and outside Tanzania.

KEY INDICATORS-TANZANIA HIV/AIDS AND MALARIA INDICATOR SURVEY

HIV/AIDS Knowledge

  • Awareness of means of HIV prevention among women and men (having 1 faithful partner, consistent use of condoms, abstinence)
  • Rejection of misconceptions (getting HIV from mosquito bites, sharing food, people with HIV show signs)
  • Knowledge of mother-to-child transmission of HIV
  • Knowledge of anti-retroviral drugs

    HIV/AIDS Attitudes/Stigma

  • HIV stigma (would buy vegetables from HIV+ vendor, would care for relative with AIDS, would not want to keep secret HIV infection of a family member and thinks HIV+ female teacher should continue teaching
  • support for children age 12-14 being taught about using a condom to avoid AIDS
  • Attitudes towards a wife's ability to refuse sex with her husband or ask to use condoms if she knows he has an STI

 

HIV/AIDS-Related Behaviour

  • Median age at first sex
  • Timing of most recent sex
  • Number of partners in the past 12 months (according to marital status)
  • Proportion of respondents age 15-24 who used a condom the first time they ever had sex
  • Age mixing (proportion of women 15-19 who had non-marital sex with a man 10+ years older in past 12 months)
  • Prevalence of higher-risk sex (non-marital, non-cohabiting partner) and condom use at last higher-risk sex #;
  • Proportion of men who paid for sex in the past 12 months and who used a condom the last time
  • Proportion who have been tested for HIV and received results
  • Prevalence of HIV counseling and testing during antenatal care visit for recent pregnancy
  • Proportion of men circumcised
  • Number of injections in the previous 12 months (total and number from medical professional)
  • Symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases and whether treatment sought

    HIV/AIDS Outcomes

  • Proportion of children under age 18 who are orphaned
  • Ratio of orphaned and non-orphaned children age 10-14 currently attending school
  • HIV seroprevalence levels (from dried blood spots tested in central laboratory)

    Malaria

  • Use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets among children under five and pregnant women
  • Proportion of women who received intermittent preventive treatment for malaria during recent pregnancy
  • Proportion of children under five with recent fever treated with timely, appropriate anti-malarial drugs
  • Prevalence of malaria infection among children aged 6-59 months
  • Prevalence of anaemia among children aged 6-59 months
    General
  • Source of household drinking water; type of toilet facility; use of solid fuels
  • Household socio-economic status (wealth quintile)
  • Under-five mortality rate; infant mortality rate
  • Education level attained by household population; primary completion rate
