"Today we are here together to discuss and agree on how we can achieve a new initiative on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) after the completion of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that our country significantly have done well in some targets and did not in others," He said.

He further explained that, if a country has good quality data, it is possible to establish demand and supply for health facilities in the country, to establish a number of those suffering from hunger and chronic diseases and those without access to education can be identified and reached.

The Chief Secretary added that, the execution of the new programs of SDGs need to have statistics  which will help to point out the position of the country in performing the implementation of such goals. That’s why the Government is putting more efforts to improve and empower the National Bureau of Statistics to continue providing quality official statistics.

On her party, the Country Director of World Bank, Ms. Bella Bird, congratulated Tanzania for the quick action taken on implementation and monitoring of the Global Sustainable Development Goals, saying that, it is a good sign of showing how this program is important to the country.

Several issues, in form of questions and suggestions, were raised in the course of the meeting.  These are reflected by the following resolutions;

  1. Stakeholders’ involvement in finalization and adaptation of the SDG indicators was important
  2. Formulation of committees at different levels to oversee the implementation and monitoring of the SDGs in Tanzania is needed
  3. Work closely with LGAs and non-state actors to tap on the administrative data produced routinely
  4. Work closely with LGAs on how to use data for policy and decision making
  5. Devise mechanisms that will enable each MDA to produce quality official statistics under minimal but close coordination of the NBS
  6. Baseline surveys need to be conducted for those SDG targets for which baseline data is not existing or outdated
  7. The cultural context should not be ignored when monitoring the SDGs.
  8. A standard data collection framework is needed.
