The report reveals that, out of five Public and Local Government owned registered television stations only TBC1 had national coverage.

There are 15 commercially owned television stations located in four regions countrywide. Out of these 12 stations are found in Dar es Salaam Region, one in Morogoro Region, one in Tabora Region and one in Mwanza Region. Therefore, Dar es Salaam has the largest number (80.0 percent) of commercially owned television stations.

The peer reviewers learned about major 14 achievements recorded by the main actors of the NSS since the last peer review conducted in 2007. These 14 achievements are: (a) increased advocacy for statistics through the concerted preparation and the implementation of the Tanzania Statistical Master Plan (TSMP); (b) the adoption of the new statistics act of 2015 that is specific about the NSS and related coordination powers as vested in the NBS; (c) the effective and structured coordination of the National Statistical System; (d) the good working relationships between NBS and development partners; (e) the inclusiveness of the TSMP; (f) the alignment of sector strategies to the Tanzania Statistics Master Plan; (g) the implementation of the TSMP through annual workplans; (h) the increased volume and quality of statistical products; (i) the significant increase of awareness among users; (j) the improvement of dissemination through a new and updated website that is available in Swahili and English; (k) the setting up of a national data centre; (l) the cordial working relationship established between the media and NBS; (m) the widespread recognition of the TSMP as an effective platform and tool for resource mobilisation and reallocation; and (n) NBS leadership role.

Eight (8) major challenges were identified and a falling on these areas: Governance of the NSS, Organizational restructuring and HR policy reform in NBS, Funding issue, Physical infrastructure, Beyond TSMP horizon, Implications of Data Revolution and readiness for SDG requirements, Selected data collection challenges, Assuring Quality Statistical Outputs.

Report on a regional workshop looking at monitoring approaches in drinking water and sanitation

The ‘East Africa data reconciliation workshop’ in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania was initiated by WaterAid and co-organised with the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP). It brought together 49 participants, senior staff and monitoring practitioners from Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, representing the different ministries and national institutions in charge of water supply, sanitation, infrastructures, environment, health, regulation and national statistics. Participants also included representatives from WaterAid, WHO, UNICEF, the German International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP).

This report traces its background to the First Panorama Report whereby a review of national tatistical systems was undertaken in brief and agricultural statistical systems in relative detail. Consistently, a range of literature was sourced from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security  and Cooperatives (MAFC), National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) various Agriculture Sector Lead Ministries (ASLMs) as well as other stakeholder institutions in an endeavour to establish the best away forward as Tanzania CountrySTAT propels forward in the context of FAOSTAT.

The Regional Strategy for Development of Statistics (RSDS), the subject of this document, is designed to improve development outcomes and governance by strengthening national statistical systems in the region. In particular, it is intended to: raise awareness of the critical role of statistical information in planning, policy research, monitoring, and evaluation; promote its greater use and adoption for evidence-based decision making; and improve capacity for statistical production and the sustainability of statistical information systems in the region in line with international best practice and norms, using relevant state-of-the-art technological innovations.

It is foreseen that the realization of the vision of the SADC Regional Statistical System can be accomplished through achievement of the following six strategic themes of the Regional Strategy for Development of Statistics (RSDS):

  • Strategic Theme 1: Widen the scope and range of available regional statistical data and indicators;
  • Strategic Theme 2: Increase comparability and quality of prioritised regional statistics;
  • Strategic Theme 3: Improve services to users and promote wider use of regional statistics;
  • Strategic Theme 4:Strengthen stakeholder partnerships and coordination of the SRSS;
  • Strategic Theme 5: Harness the latest innovations in Information, Communications, and Technology for statistical development in the region; and
  • Strategic Theme 6: Promote statistical capacity building in the region.
